Further Details
Course
Leader:
Trevor Green assisted
by members of the DBK Association.
Course
content:
It is planned to
include classroom talks about siting and setting up a hive, seasonal tasks of
the beekeeper in maintaining a colony, some aspects of the biology and behavior
of bees and general bee husbandry. There
will be visits to the Apiary to see experienced Beekeepers handling a hive -
when the weather is suitable.
Clothing:
Bee-proof clothing
must be worn: a closely fastened, wrist-tight anorak, sensible footwear or wellingtons,
long trousers, long gloves. You can borrow a veil from the association. We may
have veils to purchase.
Health
and safety:
Bees do sting. A sting usually results in a
temporary injury, pain, redness and itching around the sting site.
Sometimes a
reaction is much more severe depending on where you have been stung and whether
you have an allergic response. In some cases a sting can be life threatening.
The course will involve
walking over open land, exposure to the smoke used to control bees, and some
heavy lifting.
If you have an
ongoing medical condition of any kind, you are advised to seek medical advice
before joining this course.
